From the cattle-raising Llanos Orientales region of Colombia, Cimarrón performs the festive dance music of joropo which consists of rippling melodies and powerful rhythms that combine Andalusian, indigenous Indian and African roots. Led by harpist Carlos Rojas, Cimarrón experiments with the rich tradition of Llanero music (distinctive for its use of the harp, the maracas and a small guitar called a cuatro) while retaining its essence. The result is a fusion of instrumental and vocal virtuosity. Cimarrón’s Smithsonian Folkways Recording album “Sí Soy Llanero” was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2005. Their last album, “¡Cimarrón! Joropo Music from the Plains of Colombia,” won Best Album, Latin Category at the Independent Music Awards (2012). Cimarrón tours with the support of Southern Exposure: Performing Arts of Latin America in 2015-2016. Click on calendar for all tour dates.
