Artistic Director Sonia Destri founded Companhia Urbana de Dança in 2004 after spending several years working in the commercial dance world and traveling throughout Brazil and Europe exploring various dance forms, particularly breakdancing and “b-boy” culture in Germany. The company features nine young dancers from the suburbs and poorer neighborhoods (“favelas”) of Rio de Janeiro. They have performed at festivals and theatres throughout Europe and Latin America. The consortium partners have organized a multi-faceted tour for the company, which includes, at least, 14 public performances, master classes, workshops, local media interviews and post-show discussions. Each presenter in the consortium will host performances of Na Pista, which explores the influences that pop culture and social dance has on Destri’s choreography, and ID: Entidades, which draws on the identities and life stories of the company’s young male dancers. Although the company has performed before in the United States on a limited basis, the Southern Exposure engagements will mark Companhia Urbana de Dança’s first multi-city tour.
