Las Alegras Ambulancias was established in 1905 with a mission to preserve the music and dance traditions associated with lumbalu, a ceremony reminiscent of the funeral practices of its African ancestors. They are currently the only lumbalu ensemble touring internationally. The ensemble features three singers/dancers and three percussionists performing on traditional Afro-Colombian drums. Las Ambulancias preserves the legends, stories, music and songs of their Afro-Caribbean heritage. In addition to numerous public performances, the consortia members have designed a host of engagement activities with its respective community partners. These activities include lecture demonstrations that will be targeted to artists as well as opportunities open to the general public, visits with university students, drum and dance circles, master classes and family-friendly workshops. The artists will have several opportunities to engage with both local radio and television for interviews and coverage of the engagements. Presenting partners will work collaboratively to provide ample background information and contextualization in both print and digital formats for audiences and participants. The tour will represent Las Alegras Ambulancias’s first appearance in the United States.
